What is the Fortinet Security Fabric?
The Security Fabric is Fortinet’s architecture that connects all its products (FortiGate, FortiSwitch, FortiAP, FortiSASE, FortiEDR, FortiWeb, FortiMail and others). They share telemetry, follow one set of policies and respond to threats automatically. Management and analytics run in FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer.
What is the advantage of FortiGate over general-purpose firewalls?
FortiGate uses Fortinet’s own ASIC chips (the Network Processor and the Security Processor). They speed up packet processing and encryption in hardware. At the same price, this gives 5-10 times more throughput than x86-based products.
Can we use a third-party SD-WAN and buy only FortiGate?
FortiGate already includes SD-WAN in the base FortiOS license, so you don’t need a separate subscription. This is one of the main differences from Cisco and Palo Alto. You need an extra SD-WAN Orchestrator subscription only for large networks (100+ branches).
What does FortiSASE include?
FortiSASE is Fortinet’s cloud SASE platform. It includes ZTNA, Secure Web Gateway, CASB, Firewall-as-a-Service and DLP. It is a good fit for remote employees and branches and replaces the VPN and web filter on company computers.
Does Fortinet support OT/ICS networks?
Yes. In OT mode, FortiGate recognizes industrial protocols (Modbus, S7, DNP3, IEC 60870, EtherNet/IP) and enforces policies based on them. FortiNAC identifies devices in industrial networks. FortiGate Rugged models have hardened cases for production sites.
How long does a migration from Cisco / Palo Alto to FortiGate take?
A typical branch migration takes 1-2 weeks per device. We use FortiConverter to convert Cisco ASA / FTD, Palo Alto and Check Point configurations automatically. FortiGate runs in parallel with your current NGFW for a while, so there is no downtime.
