Frequently asked questions about Profitap.

Why do you need a hardware TAP if you have a SPAN port?
A SPAN port is a “copy by rule”, limited by the switch’s processor. Under load, SPAN drops packets, duplicates them and adds latency. A hardware TAP passively copies all traffic at the physical layer. It loses no packets and does not affect the live network. Compliance recorders and NDR systems rely on it.
What is Profitap IOTA?
IOTA is a line of all-in-one devices: TAP + capture + built-in analytics. It records traffic to its own storage and shows dashboards by application, IP conversation and TCP performance. 1G, 10G and 25G models are available. It works well for NetOps as a two-in-one device.
What is ProfiShark?
ProfiShark is a portable USB 3.0 TAP the size of a thumb drive. You connect it to a laptop to troubleshoot in the field. It comes in 1G, 2.5G and 10G versions, runs on USB power and works with Wireshark. A key tool for network forensics engineers.
Does Profitap support fail-safe mode?
Yes. All Profitap TAPs are passive: if power is lost, the network link stays up (bypass). This guarantees that installing a TAP won’t create a single point of failure in the production network.
Can Profitap be used for SSL decryption?
No. Profitap copies traffic passively, as is. SSL decryption is handled by a separate packet broker (Gigamon, Cubro) or an active SSL decryption module. Profitap works well with any of them.
